The iSchool Inclusion Institute (i3) introduces undergraduates from underrepresented communities to the information sciences and prepares them for graduate study and leadership in a field that reflects the face of society.
Two summer institutes and a mentored research project
Each year approximately twenty undergraduate students from across the country are selected to become i3 Scholars. Those students undertake a yearlong experience that prepares them for graduate study in the information sciences and, ultimately, a rewarding career that matches their interests.
Held each June at the iSchool at the University of Pittsburgh, the Introductory Institute immerses Scholars in special topics workshops and professional development sessions, with mentoring from experts in academia and industry, plus field trips, tours and social events.
After the first institute, Scholars work in teams on a yearlong research project using social networking and collaborative technology. Teams choose the topic and are supported throughout by an iSchool faculty member.
Scholars return to Pittsburgh in the second year to present their research and network with iSchool faculty and industry professionals, with a heavy emphasis on the professional skills not typically learned in a classroom.
While the United States population has grown more diverse, the student population in information sciences programs has not kept pace. By exposing promising students to a discipline that actively wants to foster their success, i3 plans to increase the number of men and women from underrepresented populations who undertake graduate study in the field.
In so doing, schools create faculty members who reflect the diversity of the overall population, and who can serve as role models for future generations.

Research teams select a current societal problem and make the case for an information related solution. Every project includes a proposal, a research paper, a poster and a presentation.
Teams explored the digital divide, aesthetic design and usability in mobile applications, media literacy in underprivileged schools, and financial management for undergraduates.
The institute has welcomed successive cohorts of Scholars who go on to present their work and network with faculty and industry professionals from across the iSchools.
All expenses, including travel, lodging and dining, are covered while Scholars are in Pittsburgh, and each Scholar receives a daily stipend during both institutes.

Housing in Ruskin Hall, campus dining, a daily stipend and travel arranged through the program.

i3 is hosted by the School of Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, partnering with iSchools at Drexel University and Pennsylvania State University. All three are members of the iSchools Caucus.
Admission is competitive, but i3 looks for qualities beyond grade point average. If you have shown academic promise, this program is for you.
